How many calories in moules-frites? Anywhere from 500 to 1,500 kcal
Mussels and fries can land anywhere between 500 and nearly 1,500 kcal depending on the fries, the sauce and the drink. Here are the numbers, and how to estimate your own plate.
Cook them at home, about a litre of mussels in white wine with 150 g of fries, and you're looking at roughly 500 to 600 kcal. Order them in a restaurant with a big pile of fries and a creamy sauce, and it can climb to almost 1,500 kcal, as one British pub serving shows. The mussels themselves are light. The fries and the sauce are what decide the total.
Why the numbers are all over the place
- The fries. Mussels on their own are a lean meal. It's the fries, and the oil they're cooked in, that push the count up.
- The sauce. A classic marinière (white wine, shallots, parsley) has little in common with a cream, beer or curry sauce. Add mayo for dipping your fries and it goes up again.
- The portion. In Belgium, a kilo of mussels (shells included) per person is pretty standard. Fries, on the other hand, vary a lot from one place to the next.
- The drink. A strong Belgian abbey beer or a glass of white wine counts too.

These numbers don't compare like for like, since the portions aren't the same. But they show how one plate can easily be triple another.
How to estimate your own plate
- Look at the fries first. That's where most of the calories hide. A small handful and an overflowing basket are two very different meals.
- Think about the sauce. Mayo, cream or curry all come on top of the mussels.
- Don't forget your drink.
- Go heavier on mussels and lighter on fries if you want a lighter plate. You keep the protein and cut back on fat and carbs.
- A big green salad on the side balances things out nicely.

BiteFrame recognises Belgian and regional dishes and estimates calories from a photo. It's still an estimate: with moules-frites, where portions change a lot from one restaurant to another, always double-check the amount of fries and the sauce. Try BiteFrame
